Former BPSC chairman’s driver Syed Abed Ali and his son Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam are among the arrestees.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested 17 people, including two deputy directors and two assistant directors of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), on allegations of leaking question papers for government job exams.

Former BPSC chairman’s driver Syed Abed Ali and his son Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam are among the arrestees.

The CID conducted several operations in Dhaka on Sunday and Monday, leading to the arrests, according to Touhidul Islam, special superintendent of the Cyber Investigation and Operations of CID.

CID officails said the media that the arrested individuals were involved in leaking the question papers of the Bangladesh Railway Assistant Engineer recruitment exam held on 5 July. They were also involved in leaking question papers for several non-cadre exams. The suspects are currently being interrogated at the CID office.

The arrestees include BPSC Deputy Directors Md Abu Zafar and Jahangir Alam, Assistant Directors SM Alamgir Kabir and Nikhil Chandra Roy, former army personnel Noman Siddiqui, former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader and businessman Abu Solaiman Mohammad Sohel, auditor Priyanath Roy, Mamunur Rashid, Narayanganj Passport Office Security Guard Shahadat Hossain, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College (ShSMC) Technician Niamun Hasan, businessmen Sakhawat Hossain and Sayem Hossain, Md. Zahidul Islam, and unemployed youth Liton Sarkar.

On 7 July, a private satellite television channel uncovered a scandal involving leaked question papers for 30 recruitment exams, including the BCS. The report revealed that a syndicate of six officials and employees of BPSC, along with several others, had been involved in leaking exam questions for a long time.

One of the accused, Syed Abed Ali, also known as Jibon, is the driver of the former PSC chairman.

This case has sparked significant public interest, with people questioning how a driver could afford a luxurious lifestyle, including a duplex home and other properties worth millions.

Additionally, Abed Ali’s son, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, posted photos of two cars, one valued at approximately Tk70 lakh and the other at Tk40 lakh, further fueling public outrage.
