State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that the government will more strictly enforce the rules requiring mobile network operators to compensate customers for call drops.
"If the mobile network operators do not deliver the promised service, then they have to compensate the customers financially," said Zunaid Ahmed Palak at a meeting at the BTRC office in the city on Sunday (June 30).
BTRC Chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed presided over the event while the top officials of mobile phone operators including AMTOB President and Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman were present.
Palak said that everything possible will be done to bring the mobile service up to the global standard with the combined efforts of the Post and Telecommunication Division and the mobile operators.
"We are working to ensure that the mobile operators provide the promised services to the customers, offer internet at affordable prices at the customer level, and ensure proper utilization of all the facilities that we are providing to the operators," said Palak.
Appreciating the role of mobile operators during Covid-19, Palak said that mobile phones have become a part of life now.
"But we see that our customers are not satisfied with their services in many cases. Call drops have become a common phenomenon. Our mobile customers are also unhappy about this," said Palak.
He said that according to the report of tests conducted by BTRC, the quality of service is not very satisfactory.
Slow Speed of Internet
Palak said that internet speed is decreasing in the country. The BTRC will conduct investigations into slow internet speeds based on customer feedback.
"We have formed a technical inspection team; they are testing the internet speeds," said Palak.
The launching of 5-G network
Regarding the 5G mobile service, Palak said that a specific target for the 5G rollout has also been given to BTRC and four mobile operators.
He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given directive to roll out 5G at airports, sea ports and some business districts, some important commercial-industrial areas and then gradually roll out.
He said that the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport may be inaugurated in October.
"I want to give a challenge to the four mobile operators to ensure that 5G at the third terminal by October 30," said Palak.
He also said that 5G-enabled smartphones are used more in Gulshan, Banani, Motijheel and Agargaon areas in the city. Palak asked mobile operators to pay attention in these areas too.
He said that he was working on how to use 5G and IoT in the management of Chittagong Port. He hopes that he will use 5G network at the Chattogram Port soon.
