There is no scope for whitening the illegal money of former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed given the criminal case underway against him, said Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, chairman of the National Board of Revenue, on Friday.

“The wealth owned by Benazir Ahmed is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission and is subject to a criminal case. He won’t get the opportunity to legalise his illegal assets now,” said the NBR chairman at a post-budget press conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.

The NBR chairman made these remarks in response to a question about whether Benazir would be able to whiten his black money by paying a 15% tax, an opportunity offered in the proposed budget for FY24-25.

Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister, added, “The allegations against Benazir are under investigation. Additionally, his assets were confiscated by court order. If found guilty, action will be taken against him as per the law.”

Among others present at the post-budget press briefing were Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Finance Waseqa Ayesha Khan, Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, LGRD Minister Tajul Islam, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu, Planning Minister Abdus Shaheed, and Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.
