A Dhaka University (DU) student died while swimming in the university's Physical Education Centre swimming pool on Monday (22 April). 

The deceased, Muhammad Sawad, 19, was a first-year student of Philosophy department and a resident of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall.

“Sawad drowned while swimming with his friends in the university's swimming pool,” confirmed DU Proctor Professor M. Maksudur Rahman to Bangladesh First.

“The body of the deceased has been placed in the morgue of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination,” added the proctor.

Sawad's friend, Md Sohag, said, 'Many students were bathing at the swimming pool in the afternoon. At that moment, I noticed Sawad was surrounded by several students. Soon after, I learned that he had drowned in the pool. We immediately took him to DMCH, where the attending doctor declared him dead.”
