Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to resume classes on 22 September, following nearly a three-month closure due to student and teacher movements.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan on Monday, which was attended by deans, department chairpersons, and dormitory heads.

During the meeting, a preliminary proposal to reopen classes in the last week of September was approved. The final decision will be confirmed in the upcoming syndicate meeting.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has called for cooperation from all stakeholders, including teachers and students, to ensure a smooth transition back to academic activities.

In a significant move, the DU administration also announced the end of the 'Gonoroom' system, a practice where dozens of students were cramped into a small room in the dormitories.

The university administration has already held meetings with students at the hall level, and similar discussions are ongoing at the department and institute levels.

Several important concerns raised by students during these interactions are being seriously considered by the administration. The overall situation of the campus was also reviewed during the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, Treasurer Professor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, and Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed.
