In the early hours of 15 April 1912, the RMS Titanic sank beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic at 2:27am, just hours after striking an iceberg late the previous evening.
The ship, touted as the pinnacle of maritime engineering, lacked sufficient lifeboats for all aboard.
Despite desperate efforts to evacuate, between 1,490 and 1,635 passengers and crew lost their lives.
Survivors recalled haunting images of the ship’s band playing to the end, as chaos unfolded on deck.
The disaster prompted sweeping reforms in maritime safety regulations.
