At 11:40pm on 14 April 1912, the RMS Titanic, then the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner, struck an iceberg while crossing the North Atlantic on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
Despite being touted as “unsinkable,” the ship foundered within hours, sinking in the early morning of 15 April.
Over 1,500 lives were lost in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history, prompting widespread reforms in maritime safety.
