A deadly confrontation between two rival political factions in Raipura upazila’s Mohinipur village resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least ten others, as competing groups vied for territorial dominance on Friday (21 March).

The victims, Amin Mia, 23 and Bashar, 35, both supporters of the Salam group, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during the fierce altercation.

The clash stemmed from a longstanding dispute between Abdus Salam, a local Awami League leader, and Haji Shamsu Member, the BNP Chanpur Union unit president.

According to local sources, members of the Salam group had vacated the area months ago due to rising tensions.

However, when they attempted to return on Friday morning, supporters of Shamsu Member confronted them, leading to an eruption of violence involving firearms and crude weapons.

“We received reports that Amin and Bashar were shot dead during the confrontation,” said Prabir Kumar Ghosh, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Raipura police station.

Confirming the incident, Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Masud Rana stated, "Two groups clashed over territorial dominance, resulting in two fatalities from gunfire."

Law enforcement agencies struggled to reach the site promptly due to the remote nature of the area, according to police officials.

Authorities remain on high alert, fearing potential retaliatory violence, as tensions continue to simmer in the politically volatile region.
