Students from various educational institutions in Dhaka have launched a protest at Shahbagh, in front of the National Museum, demanding the death penalty for rapists and stricter measures against sexual violence.
The demonstration, which began at 11:30 am on Tuesday (11 March), features students chanting slogans such as “We Want Justice,” “Hang the Rapists,” “The Student Community Has Awakened,” and “Who are you, who am I, Asiya, Asiya.”
Protesters stated that the alarming rise in rape incidents across the country prompted them to take to the streets. They emphasized the need for swift justice and the highest punishment for perpetrators.
During the demonstration, students announced their demand:
Public Execution of Rapists:
Ensuring that rapists are punished in public to set an example and deter future crimes.
Zero-Tolerance Policy Against Rape:
Authorities must adopt a strict zero-tolerance approach to rape, potentially establishing special tribunals for expedited trials.
Fast-Track Judicial Process:
Authorities must ensure that within 24 hours of a rape incident, the perpetrator is arrested, a medical report is prepared, and victim and witness statements are recorded. The trial should be completed within 15 working days, ensuring a death sentence for the convicted rapist. Laboratories for forensic testing should also be increased to speed up investigations.
Ban on Out-of-Court Settlements:
Informal arbitration or settlements in rape cases must be banned. Only the state should have the authority to ensure justice. Any official found facilitating the release of an accused rapist through illegal means should be dismissed. A life sentence should be imposed even if the perpetrator is a minor.
Fast-Track Existing Cases:
Pending rape cases must be resolved swiftly. If necessary, special tribunals should be formed to complete trials within 30 working days. The Ministries of Law and Home Affairs must be held accountable for ensuring this.
Students vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met, calling on the government to take immediate action.
