The Supreme Court has suspended the High Court’s ruling that nullified the government’s decision to recruit 6,531 assistant teachers in government primary schools across Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, issued the stay order on Monday (3 March). The ruling was delivered by the chamber court of Justice Md Rezaul Haque.

During the hearing, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman represented the state, while senior lawyer Zainul Abedin argued on behalf of the petitioners.

Earlier, on 18 February, the High Court had set 2 March for the hearing of a petition seeking a stay on its own verdict, which had annulled the government’s decision to issue appointment letters to the selected candidates.

On 6 February, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Nazib and Justice Mahmudur Raji had ruled against the government’s recruitment decision, effectively cancelling the appointment process for the 6,531 candidates.

The legal proceedings leave the fate of thousands of aspiring teachers hanging in uncertainty as the judicial process unfolds.
