A joint security operation in the Haji Mazar slum of Tongi, Gazipur, has resulted in the detention of more than 50 individuals implicated in crimes such as drug trafficking, mugging, and other illicit activities.

Authorities also recovered narcotics, makeshift weapons, and various illegal paraphernalia during the raid.

The operation commenced at 7pm on Saturday (1 March) along the banks of the Turag River, adjacent to the Bishwa Ijtema grounds, under Tongi West police station.

Concluding at 9pm, the raid was conducted by a substantial contingent of personnel from the army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the police.

Security forces searched multiple dwellings within the slum, uncovering a cache of locally manufactured weapons, drugs, and drug consumption equipment.

The detained individuals, suspected of involvement in criminal activities, were taken into custody for further legal proceedings.

Speaking at a post-operation press conference, Gazipur Executive Magistrate Raihanul Islam, stated, “The operation involved personnel from the army, police, RAB, and BGB. There are allegations that residents of the slum have been involved in muggings and robberies. So far, approximately 60 identified criminals, including drug dealers, have been apprehended.”

Authorities also seized illicit substances and cash, with the magistrate affirming that similar operations will continue throughout the holy month of Ramadan.

Law enforcement officials noted that industrial areas such as Tongi and nearby Uttara have become crime-prone zones, necessitating stringent measures to restore order. The arrested individuals will face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.

Local residents expressed long-standing concerns over the slum’s reputation as a hub for drug trade and criminal activities. Despite repeated complaints lodged with the police, no substantial action had been taken until now.

The slum not only served as a point of drug distribution but also provided facilities for consumption, drawing criminals, muggers, and gang members seeking refuge.
