A youth was killed in Gazipur’s Tongi, while two others were mercilessly beaten in Dhaka’s Uttara last night in separate incidents of mob violence, triggered by suspicions of mugging.

In the Mashimpur area of Tongi, a young man was fatally beaten around 10:30pm after locals accused him of attempting to snatch a mobile phone.

According to Faridul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station, the victim was caught near Tongi Station Road around 7:30pm and pursued by an enraged crowd. Seeking refuge in an alley, he was cornered and subjected to a violent assault.

Severely injured, the youth was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

His body has been kept at Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital and will be sent for autopsy following the preparation of the inquest report.

Law enforcement is working with the CID crime scene unit to ascertain his identity through fingerprint matching.

Meanwhile, in Dhaka’s Uttara, two young men, aged between 20 and 25, were apprehended by a mob near BNS Centre around 9:30pm.

In a shocking display of public outrage, they were hung upside down from a footbridge near Rajuk Uttara Model College and severely beaten before being handed over to police.

A video of the brutal assault has since gone viral on social media.

Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station, confirmed that the injured duo had been admitted to Kuwait Maitri Hospital. Authorities are currently investigating whether the two were indeed involved in criminal activities.

Both incidents highlight the perils of mob vigilantism, raising grave concerns over the alarming recurrence of extrajudicial violence in the name of public justice.
