Yunus-led consensus commission to oversee reforms ahead of elections

Interim government has constituted the National Consensus Commission under the leadership of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, set to commence its operations on 15 February, focusing on electoral and institutional reforms

The interim government has announced the formation of a National Consensus Commission under the leadership of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, which is scheduled to commence operations on 15 February.

A government notification issued on Wednesday (13 February), by the Cabinet Division confirmed the establishment of the commission, which aims to facilitate broad-based consensus on crucial institutional reforms.

Ali Riaz, head of the Constitutional Reform Commission, has been appointed vice-chair of the commission.

Other members include Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, head of the Public Administration Reform Commission; Safar Raj Hossain, chief of the Police Reform Commission; Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral System Reform Commission; Justice Emdadul Haque, a member of the Judicial Reform Commission; and Iftekharuzzaman, head of the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission.

According to the official notification, the commission’s mandate includes engaging in discussions with political parties and stakeholders to build national consensus on reform proposals put forward by the respective commissions on electoral processes, policing, the judiciary, public administration, constitutional amendments, and anti-corruption measures. It will subsequently recommend actionable steps to implement these reforms.

The commission has been granted a tenure of six months from the commencement of its activities.

The Office of the Chief Adviser will provide secretarial support to facilitate its functions.
