A South Korean court has handed down an eight-month suspended prison sentence to O Yeong-Su, an actor from the popular Netflix series Squid Game, following charges of sexual misconduct.

The 79-year-old was charged in 2022 with sexually assaulting a woman twice, reports the BBC.

Additionally, O was suspended for two years and ordered to complete 40 hours of classes on sexual violence, as reported by AFP citing court orders. O has stated he will appeal against the verdict and has seven days to do so.

The allegations were that O hugged a woman and kissed her on the cheek against her will when he was staying in a rural area for a theatre performance in 2017.

The actor rose to international fame after starring in "Squid Game," a series that depicts a dark world where marginalized individuals are forced to compete in deadly versions of traditional children's games, quickly gaining immense popularity on Netflix.

Within less than four weeks of its release in 2021, it attracted a staggering 111 million viewers.

In 2022, O Yeong-Su became the first South Korean to win a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor in the series.
