Students of Government Titumir College have submitted a one-point demand to a government delegation, calling for an official notification upgrading the institution to university status.

Declaring their intent to escalate demonstrations if their demand remains unmet, the students announced plans for an overnight protest and hunger strike in front of the college premises.

From Friday (31 January), they plan to enforce an indefinite blockade at Mahakhali Railway, Amtoli, and the Gulshan-Barasat Barricade to Mahakhali, disrupting key transport routes in the capital.

The agitation began on Thursday (30 January), when nearly 250 students took to the streets, chanting slogans in favour of university recognition and halting vehicular movement.

Eyewitnesses reported that students blocked the road in the afternoon, demanding immediate government action.

The protests follow the recent decision by Dhaka University (DU) to revoke its affiliation with seven government colleges, including Titumir College, for the 2024-25 academic session.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan made the announcement on Monday (27 January), after an emergency meeting with the principals of the affected colleges.
