The government will not establish new universities based on public protests or demands, Education and Planning Adviser Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud said during a meeting on Sunday (2 February).
Dr. Wahiduddin said the demand for upgrading Titumir College into a university as per the students’ deadline is not logical. He also said that setting a time-bound ultimatum for such demands is illogical and counterproductive. "We won’t accept any demands resulting from protests that could have long-term adverse effects," he stated.
He also revealed that an expert committee has been formed to evaluate the possibility of transforming seven affiliated colleges into a university-like structure.
While acknowledging the right to protest, the adviser urged students to balance their activism with their academic responsibilities and to design their programmes in a way that minimises public inconvenience.
The students of Titumir College have been staging demonstrations by blocking roads for the last several days demanding their college to be turned into a university, causing traffic chaos at Mohakhali and adjacent areas and public suffering.
