A Chinese police dog has found itself at the centre of an unusual controversy after its year-end bonus was revoked due to workplace "misconduct"—napping on duty and urinating in its own food bowl.

The canine officer, a Corgi named Fuzai, was recruited as a reserve explosives detection dog at the Weifang Public Security Bureau’s training base in Shandong province in early 2024, according to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Despite his relatively short tenure, Fuzai has gained widespread popularity online, amassing a devoted following on Chinese social media.

The Weifang Public Security Bureau, which manages the social media account "Corgi Police Dog Fuzai and Its Comrades"—with over 384,000 followers—shared a video of the disciplinary review, where an officer playfully presented Fuzai with a red flower, canned snacks, and toys in recognition of his service.

However, as his "offences" were revealed, the rewards were swiftly retracted, with the officer citing his drowsiness at work and the unfortunate incident of urinating in his own bowl as grounds for disciplinary action.

"You performed exceptionally this year. You passed the Level 4 assessment for police dogs, completed multiple security tasks, and played a key role in promoting Weifang's police dog unit," the officer commended before adding: "But due to your recent behaviour—falling asleep on duty and urinating in your food bowl—we have no choice but to confiscate your rewards. You may keep only the red flower."

Public Outcry and Online Campaign

As the video gained traction, social media users expressed both amusement and outrage, arguing that Fuzai’s commendable performance should not be overshadowed by minor infractions.

"Poor Fuzai worked diligently all year, only to be denied his bonus—I relate so much!" one user lamented. Another quipped: "He peed in his own bowl, not in his superior’s—return his bonus at once!"

Following the online uproar, the Weifang Public Security Bureau responded with a follow-up video, reassuring Fuzai’s supporters that although his snacks had been revoked, he had received a generous Lunar New Year gift package instead.

The light-hearted exchange has not only entertained netizens but also highlighted the endearing connection between the public and their beloved four-legged officers.
