An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was felt in the capital and various parts of the country at 1:26am on Friday (24 January).
The tremors, reported to have originated in Myanmar, were recorded at a depth of 112 kilometres below the surface, according to Volcano Discovery, a global earthquake and volcano monitoring platform.
Residents, many of whom were in bed at the time, reported strong but brief tremors.
Volcano Discovery noted that the earthquake occurred in two distinct jolts.
The first, lasting 2 to 3 seconds, was more intense and caused noticeable shaking. The second, occurring moments later, was milder.
The tremors were reported in regions including Sylhet, Sherpur, and Feni, as well as neighbouring parts of Myanmar and several states in India.
Fortunately, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have surfaced.
While the earthquake caused alarm, experts confirm it was of moderate intensity and did not persist long enough to cause significant harm.
Authorities are monitoring the situation for any developments.
