Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has alleged that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian regime presided over rampant corruption and embezzlement in the banking sector, with approximately $17 billion (around Tk1.7 lakh crore) looted from financial institutions.
Yunus made these remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday (22 January), reports BSS.
Discussing the Rohingya crisis, Dr Yunus announced plans for his government to convene a significant international conference to reinvigorate global attention to the plight of the refugees.
"Through this initiative, we aim to bring the suffering of Rohingya refugees back into the forefront of global discourse," he stated.
The meeting also encompassed discussions on critical global matters, including Donald Trump’s inauguration as the US president, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the increasing role of the Global South in geopolitics, and the pressing Rohingya crisis.
President Stubb underscored the necessity of a world governed by the rule of law, adding, “I wish you all the best.” He further urged nations in the Global South to adopt a more proactive stance on international issues of significance.
Yunus apprised the Finnish leader of the interim government’s reform initiatives, receiving words of encouragement for these efforts.
The meeting reflected a shared vision for fostering accountability and international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
