Bangladesh Eye Hospital Paediatric Ophthalmologist Dr Shahedara Begum has been arrested for allegedly conducting surgery on the wrong eye of a child patient.

"She was arrested from her residence on Elephant Road around 2am on Thursday (16 January)," said Ali Ahmed Masud, chief of Dhanmondi Police Station.

The incident came to light after the child's father, Mahmud Hasan, filed a complaint of medical malpractice.

"The child's father filed a case yesterday complaining of medical malpractice. We have arrested her over the case," said police.

According to the family, one-and-a-half-year-old Irtija Ariz Hasan was taken to Dr Begum on Tuesday for treatment of a left eye ailment.

Following the required medical tests and anaesthesia, the child was taken into the operating theatre.

However, the family discovered post-surgery that the procedure had been performed on the right eye instead.

Upon bringing this to the doctor’s attention, the child was returned to the operation theatre, and the surgery was then carried out on the correct eye.

The family has since alleged negligence, leading to the doctor’s arrest.
