Shah Alam, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station, escaped from custody on Thursday (9 January) night, prompting the suspension of the duty assistant sub-inspector (ASI).

Abdul Karim, the Duty Officer of the station, confirmed hearing about the escape but stated that instructions had been given not to speak to the OC about the matter.

A senior officer of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also confirmed Shah Alam's escape, identifying him as an inspector and former OC of Uttara East.

Shah Alam had been arrested on Wednesday night in connection with a murder case filed on 2 September relating to an anti-discrimination student movement.

His court appearance was scheduled for Thursday, but he managed to escape during the transfer process.

Following the incident, efforts to re-arrest Shah Alam are underway.

The ASI on duty has been suspended for negligence, although the ASI's name has not been disclosed.

Sources revealed that Shah Alam had multiple cases against him, including murder charges stemming from the anti-discrimination student protests.

He joined Uttara East Police Station on 1 August and was arrested by Uttara East police on Thursday afternoon.

The escape occurred while the process of presenting him in court was ongoing.

Police HQ have issued a red alert for Shah Alam's recapture on Friday (10 January).
