Prime accused Mehraj remanded in Parvez killing case

A court here today placed Mehraj Islam, 20, prime accused in the case lodged over the brutal killing of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of the Textile Engineering Department at Primeasia University, in the city's Banani area on 19 April on a five-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to place him on a 10-day remand in the case.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 on 23 April arrested Mehraj, son of Nurul Islam Sardar of the capital's Banani Hajaribari area, from Gaibandha Sadar upazila. 

Earlier on 19 April, Zahidul Islam Parvez, a third-year student of the Textile Engineering Department at Primeasia University and his friend Md Tariqul Islam were attacked with sharp weapons by a group of individuals on a road in front of the university.

Later, Parvez, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

On 20 April, Parvez's cousin Humayun Kabir filed the case with Banani Police Station, naming eight individuals and accusing 25-30 people in total, of involvement in the crime.
