Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has urged the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) as part of its proposed police reform measures.

Addressing a press briefing on Tuesday (10 December) at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, a Standing Committee member of the party, revealed that the party had already conveyed this recommendation to the police reform committee established by the interim government.

BNP further suggested forming a police commission to ensure the accountability of the law enforcement agencies.

"Although the reform committee did not officially seek recommendations from us, we deemed it necessary to submit our proposals," Major Hafiz stated, emphasising that restructuring this critical state institution was an urgent necessity.

"We have engaged in discussions with retired police officers, journalists, and other stakeholders," he continued.

"Our proposals focus on narrowing the gap between the police and the public, a measure we believe is crucial for restoring trust and efficiency."
