Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali has urged residents of the capital to refrain from giving in to extortion, asserting that such practices contribute significantly to the rising costs of essential goods.

Speaking at a "Meet the Press" event held at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Monday (9 December), the commissioner emphasised the indispensable role of public cooperation in maintaining law and order.

"Without the support of Dhaka's residents, our efforts will bear little fruit. Extortion is a pressing concern, and citizens must unite against it. Do not give in to extortionists. We are closely monitoring how these individuals operate, and action is being taken," said Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali.

He added, "Extortion is directly causing the escalation of prices for daily necessities. Immediate steps are being undertaken, and the results will soon be visible."

On the issue of false cases, the commissioner acknowledged an increase in harassment through fabricated lawsuits in Dhaka and across the country following incidents in July and August. He noted that senior police officials are aware of the issue.

"If a plaintiff lodges false cases against alleged extortionists, those engaged in such activities will themselves face extortion charges," he said.

The commissioner further clarified that no arrests will be made in false cases without thorough investigation.

He pointed out that most cases filed after the July uprising were court-directed, with some involving over 200 defendants.

Turning to traffic concerns, Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali underscored the ongoing challenges in Dhaka's chaotic traffic management but assured the public of initiatives to restore order.

He urged parents to rent accommodation near schools and colleges and encouraged reduced use of private vehicles to alleviate congestion.

The commissioner attributed the growing number of autorickshaws to the policies of the previous government, cautioning that the unchecked increase could lead to severe urban challenges.

"If the situation remains unaddressed, the city's residents will face dire consequences. Discussions with the government are underway to implement corrective measures," he revealed.

In a bid to address public grievances, the DMP plans to establish a complaint cell at its headquarters.

Additionally, "Open Day" events will be organised to gather citizen feedback on police services and address broader civic concerns.

These measures, the commissioner believes, will pave the way for a more collaborative approach between the DMP and the city's residents in tackling pressing urban challenges.
