The interim government is initiating plans to provide subsidised goods from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to 10 lakh garment workers, in addition to the 1 crore families already benefiting from the TCB Family Card programme, said Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (27 November), following a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Economic Affairs at the secretariat, he outlined the initiative.

The advisor stated that the TCB has introduced Family Cards to provide essential commodities at affordable prices to low-income groups.

Currently, 1 crore families are receiving subsidised goods, including edible oil, lentils, and sugar.

The government now plans to extend this support to 10 lakh garment workers affiliated with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Sources indicated that the initial phase will focus on distributing subsidised goods to workers in garment factories located in Tongi, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Ashulia, Savar, and other areas surrounding Dhaka.

This move underscores the government’s commitment to mitigating financial hardships for low-income and vulnerable groups, especially within the garment industry.
