Police have arrested a 19-year-old suspect charged with the murder of Bangladeshi researcher Sheikh Abir Hossain during a robbery at a store in Beaumont, Texas, in the US on Friday (29 December).
The suspect, Robinson, was arrested only hours after the killing of Abir and police are seeking the second suspect, seen on the store surveillance camera armed with a handgun, wearing black jeans, and a black hoodie, as reported by Beaumont media KFDM, citing police sources.
Sheikh Abir Hossain, a former Dhaka University student, went to the US last January to pursue higher studies and joined as a graduate research assistant at Lamar University.
He left behind a wife, a two-year-old daughter, and his widowed mother.
Beaumont Police officer Morrow told KFDM that police responded to Kris Food Mart at 10:09 pm on December 29, where Sheikh Abir Hossain worked as a store clerk, and found him dead from gunshot wounds. The preliminary investigation has revealed that two suspects entered the store and robbed Abir at gunpoint. One suspect shot and killed the clerk before stealing cigarettes and fleeing on foot.
Suspect 2 is armed with a handgun, wearing black jeans, and a black hoodie that says 'NERD.' Police are searching for him, said the officer.
The Bangladesh Student Association at Lamar University is coming together to support Sheikh Abir's family. They created a fundraising medium titled 'Go Fund Me' to raise funds for Abir’s family and have collected $62,288 as of the report writing. Almost 1,500 people have donated to this fund, and the organizers aim to raise up to $80,000, according to the fund rising site.
