Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued an alert predicting thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour across 11 districts, including Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Comilla, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet.

The advisory, issued for river ports on Wednesday (6 November) until 1pm, indicates that a temporary gust or squall originating from the south or southeast at speeds between 45-60 kilometres per hour may sweep through these areas, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms.

River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist signal number 1 as a precautionary measure.

In a separate bulletin, the department reported that a seasonal low-pressure system remains active over the southern Bay of Bengal.

Under these conditions, scattered thunderstorms with gusts are anticipated by evening in parts of the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, while isolated areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barisal divisions may experience temporary gusts with rainfall or thunderstorms.

In Dhaka, a thunderstorm accompanied by hail was observed in the early hours, starting around 2am and continuing steadily until 3am.

Intermittent rainfall was accompanied by occasional hail in several areas across the city.

Residents reported relief from the cooler air sweeping through the capital on Tuesday (5 November) after the rain. Around 7pm, dark clouds gathered over Dhaka, and a chilly breeze commenced, followed by light drizzles at 8pm.

This sudden rainfall caused disruptions for street vendors, returning office workers, and law enforcement personnel on duty.

According to the Meteorological Department, wind speeds in Dhaka currently range between 8 and 12 kilometres per hour, blowing from the north and northwest.

Over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature recorded in Dhaka was 33.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 25 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, on Tuesday (5 November), meteorologist Khandakar Hafizur Rahman of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasted that parts of the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, as well as isolated areas in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barisal divisions, may experience temporary gusts with showers or thunderstorms within the next 24 hours.

A slight drop in both daytime and nighttime temperatures is expected across the country, and light to moderate fog may form over river basins nationwide towards dawn.
