Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasa has stressed the urgent need for global unity in addressing climate change, calling on developed countries to fulfill their commitments to climate finance and technological support for vulnerable nations.
Speaking as the Chief Guest at the COP29 reception hosted by the European Union in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Monday (28 October), Rizwana Hasan highlighted the importance of equitable solutions that address the disproportionate impacts faced by countries like Bangladesh.
The EU's COP29 reception, held to foster collaboration among nations and stakeholders ahead of the COP29 conference, saw Rizwana Hasan emphasising Bangladesh’s limited contribution to global emissions in contrast to its high climate vulnerability. “It’s time that developed nations uphold their commitments to support the most affected countries,” she urged. She added that Bangladesh’s resilience must be complemented by substantial and sustainable global support and highlighted her government’s commitment to increasing youth engagement in climate actions.
European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, also spoke at the event, commending Bangladesh for its proactive efforts in environmental conservation and climate resilience, as well as its active participation in the Global Climate Resilience Network.
The reception was attended by ambassadors from European countries, Bangladesh's Environment Secretary, international delegates, government representatives, environmental stakeholders, and youth climate activists.
The event concluded with a call for climate equity, serving as a reminder that meaningful progress at COP29 requires collective, immediate action to protect the planet for future generations.
