Faced with mounting student protests, the vice-chancellor and pro-VC of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have tendered their resignations.

Professor Dr Muhammad Mashud and Professor Dr SK Shariful Alam submitted their resignation letters to the Ministry of Education late on 23 April.

A senior official from the Scholarships and Engineering Division of the Secondary and Higher Education Department, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to the media.

The official stated that although the government had taken several measures to resolve the issue, the situation remained deadlocked.

Consequently, the ministry requested both officials to consider stepping down, following which their resignations were submitted.

In accordance with protocol, the resignation letters will now be forwarded to the president's office, as the chancellor of the university.

The resignations will take effect once formally accepted by President Mohammed Shahbuddin.

At approximately 1am on Thursday (24 April) University Grants Commission member Professor Dr Tanzimuddin Khan persuaded the fasting students to end their hunger strike by offering them juice, thus concluding nearly 58 hours of protest. The students subsequently returned to their respective halls.

The protest stemmed from ongoing unrest at KUET.

On 22 April, 29 students commenced a hunger strike demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Mashud.

The students had pledged to continue their fast unto death until their single-point demand was met.
