Rezaul Karim Mallick has been removed from his position as chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), according to an official order issued on Saturday (12 April) from the office of the DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali.
The decision comes days after the DB detained model Meghna Alam, who was subsequently jailed under the Special Powers Act with a 30-day detention order. Meghna was sent to prison via the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka at around 10pm on Thursday night.
At a press conference on Sunday (13 April), law adviser Asif Nazrul criticised the manner of Meghna’s arrest, deeming it procedurally flawed.
The transfer order, signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali, stated that Additional Commissioner (Detective) Rezaul Karim Mallick has been reassigned to DMP Headquarters until further notice, citing “administrative interests.”
The directive takes immediate effect.
Rezaul was appointed as the head of DMP’s Detective Branch on 1 September.
A 17th batch officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police), Rezaul joined the force in 1998.
Before taking charge of DMP's DB, he held several key roles including positions within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
