Bangladesh is expected to face one or two severe heatwaves in April, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In its long-range weather outlook, the Met Office predicted 2-4 mild (36-38.9°C) to moderate (38-39.9°C) heatwaves and 1-2 severe (40-41.9°C) heatwaves across the country this month.

Rainfall is likely to be below normal, while 1-2 low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal, with one potentially intensifying into a depression or cyclone.

Additionally, 5-7 days of light to moderate thunderstorms with hail and 1-3 days of severe thunderstorms with hail are expected. Day and night temperatures are also likely to remain above normal.

The forecast was based on extensive analysis, including upper-level weather patterns, atmospheric charts, and data from global meteorological institutes such as WMO, ECMWF, NOAA, and Columbia University.

The water flow of major rivers is expected to remain normal, though rivers in the northeastern region may see a rapid rise in water levels due to moderate to heavy rainfall in adjacent catchment areas during the second half of the month.

Bangladesh, already struggling with climate-related challenges, faces growing risks from extreme heat.

In 2024, soaring temperatures above 42°C led to the nationwide closure of schools, disrupting the education of approximately 33 million children.
