Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has acknowledged that India was well aware of the intensifying public resentment and growing protests against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh but refrained from any intervention.

According to a report by The Hindu, Jaishankar conveyed this information on Saturday (22 March) to India’s Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The report states that, like other key stakeholders, India had been closely monitoring the escalating unrest within Bangladesh.

Jaishankar cited recent remarks by Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who had warned Bangladesh’s military against engaging in confrontations with unarmed demonstrators during the anti-Hasina protests.

The UN cautioned that any such action could prompt the organisation to bar the Bangladesh Army from participating in peacekeeping operations.

Jaishankar’s remarks suggest that while India maintained a watchful eye on the evolving political crisis in Bangladesh, it opted not to interfere directly, despite being aware of the rising public discontent that ultimately led to Hasina’s downfall.
