Concern about recent violence and instability in Bangladesh is shared by the political spectrum in India, said the Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
“India is in regular touch with the authorities in Bangladesh, which is in the grip of a political crisis after its prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country,” he said while making a suo moto statement on the floor of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (6 August), reports the Times of India.
“In the last 24 hours, we have also been in regular touch with the authorities in Dhaka. This is the situation as of now. I seek the understanding and support of the House in regard to sensitive issues regarding an important neighbour on which there has always been a strong national consensus," he added.
Stating the situation in Bangladesh is still evolving, he, added that the Modi government is in close and continuous communication with the Indian community in Bangladesh.
"A bulk of the Indian students have already returned to India," Jaishankar said.
Earleir in the day, Jaishankar informed an all-party meeting that India has assured help Sheikh Hasina who arrived in India on 5 August evening.
“The agitation at this stage coalesced around a one-point agenda i.e. that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should step down,” he added.
“Our understanding is that after a meeting with the leaders of the security establishment, PM Hasina apparently made the decision to resign. At very short notice she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi,” he further said.
