Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has approved a proposal to rename the country’s sole satellite, Bangabandhu Satellite-1, as Bangladesh Satellite-1.
The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology issued an official notification on Monday (3 March), confirming the decision.
Signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, the notification stated that the chief adviser had sanctioned the renaming proposal and directed the relevant authorities to undertake the necessary procedural measures.
The decision to rename the satellite was previously deliberated and approved in a meeting of the Advisory Council.
Bangabandhu Satellite-1 was launched in 2018 under a project overseen by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
On 31 January 2022, its ownership was transferred to the newly formed Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL), established under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to manage its operations.
The satellite was manufactured by the French aerospace company Thales Alenia Space. With its launch, Bangladesh became the 57th nation to join the global satellite-owning community.
