A devastating fire engulfed a stationary Gangchil Paribahan bus in Tongibari, Munshiganj, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old helper who was asleep inside.

"The incident occurred around 2:30am on Wednesday (12 February) near the Baligaon Bazar bridge in Tongibari upazila. The deceased, identified as Jahabir Mia, was the son of Sohel Mia from Palgaon village in Louhajong upazila, said Tongibari Police Station OC Mahidul Islam.

Following the incident, two units from the Louhajong and Tongibari Fire Service swiftly responded and managed to extinguish the blaze. However, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and an investigation is currently underway, according to the Fire Service.

Munshiganj Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Md Shafiqul Islam stated that upon receiving the report of the fire at 2:30am, fire-fighting units from Louhajong and Tongibari were dispatched promptly.

“The helper was asleep inside the bus and succumbed to severe burns covering his entire body. There was no electrical connection in the bus, and it is common for drivers and helpers to light mosquito coils while sleeping. We are investigating whether this was the cause or if foul play was involved,” he added.

Police said the body had been recovered and sent to Munshiganj General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

A case of unnatural death is being filed in connection with the incident.
