The Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, Tripura, has announced the resumption of visa and consular services from Wednesday. The decision was confirmed in a notice published on the mission’s website on Tuesday (4 February).
Services had been suspended since December following an incident in which members of several Hindu organisations, including the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, stormed the high commission premises in protest against alleged minority oppression in Bangladesh. During the intrusion, demonstrators also desecrated the Bangladeshi national flag.
In response, Bangladesh halted all visa and consular operations, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express strong protest over the attack.
Following the incident, Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad returned to Dhaka and rejoined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before resuming his post in Agartala on 7 January.
The restoration of visa and consular services marks a return to normalcy in diplomatic operations between the two neighbouring nations.
