The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has commenced an investigation into Saima Wazed, daughter of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over accusations of securing the role of the World Health Organization's (WHO) regional director for South-East Asia through corruption and various irregularities.
"A dedicated team has already been formed to pursue this inquiry," said ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain during a press conference held at the ACC's headquarters on Wednesday (15 January).
He stated that Saima Wazed allegedly obtained the WHO Regional Director position through unethical means, leveraging her mother’s influence. The accusations suggest that Sheikh Hasina improperly exerted her authority to secure this prestigious role for her daughter, despite her not meeting the required qualifications.
Following a preliminary assessment of the evidence, the ACC resolved to proceed with a full investigation.
Additionally, Akhtar Hossain revealed that the commission is also investigating allegations of money laundering involving Sheikh Hasina's defence advisor, Tarique Siddique, and his family members.
