The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents have successfully forced India to suspend its barbed wire fence construction along the border, stated Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
In a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Sunday (12 January), the Adviser emphasised that no construction of barbed wire fences would be allowed within 150 yards of the border.
However, he mentioned there would be no objections if the construction was beyond this boundary.
The adviser also highlighted that the Indian authorities had been informed of Bangladesh’s stance against allowing such construction work. Communication with India has been established, ensuring that the matter is addressed.
Further clarifying the situation, the adviser remarked, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been notified. The Indian High Commissioner will be summoned within a couple of days to provide detailed information and formally protest the construction."
During the briefing, the adviser noted that during previous administrations, India had managed to erect barbed wire fences in certain border areas. Out of the total 4,156 kilometres of the Bangladesh-India border, India has completed fencing along 3,271 kilometres. The remaining 885 kilometres are the focus of India’s ongoing construction efforts, which Bangladesh has now firmly opposed.
