Dhaka and most other parts of the country experienced a brief respite from the chilly weather over the past few days as the sun graced its skies.
However, Wednesday (8 January) morning saw the city along with much of the country enveloped in fog, intensifying the cold from early dawn.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned starting 8 January, a cold wave is expected to sweep across the country once more.
Temperatures are anticipated to drop, accompanied by dense fog, which will exacerbate the cold sensation due to the brisk winds.
Daytime temperatures across the country could fall by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, with a slight dip in nighttime temperatures as well.
BMD stated that the weather across Bangladesh would remain predominantly dry with temporarily partly cloudy skies.
Moderate to dense fog is expected to blanket the country from midnight to morning, potentially disrupting air travel, inland water transport, and road communications.
The synoptic situation reveals that the extension of the subcontinental high-pressure ridge stretches across West Bengal and adjoining areas. The seasonal low lies over the southern Bay of Bengal, with its extension reaching the northern Bay of Bengal.
Long-term forecasts for January suggest that such conditions will persist throughout the month, with multiple cold spells likely to sweep across the nation, including the capital. The country's minimum temperature could plummet to as low as 4 degrees Celsius during these periods.
BMD further noted the likelihood of one or two low-pressure areas forming over the southern Bay of Bengal in January, with at least one potentially developing into a depression.
The western, northern, and northeastern regions of the country might experience one or two moderate (6-8°C) to severe (4-6°C) cold spells, while other areas could see two to three mild (10-8°C) to moderate (6-8°C) cold spells.
