Interim government plans to replace machine-readable passports with fully electronic passports (e-passports) by December this year, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

After inspecting the passport office in Agargaon, Dhaka on Monday (6 January) the adviser outlined that the government's ongoing efforts are aimed at converting all passports into electronic versions, noting that this transition would be completed under his tenure.

He expressed his desire to finalise the process by the end of this year, ensuring that e-passports are accessible to all.

He also highlighted plans to improve service quality at passport offices, acknowledged that obtaining a passport currently takes a considerable amount of time, and stressed the need for a faster processing system, which he has instructed to be implemented immediately.

Further, the adviser informed that individuals currently residing in Bangladesh without valid visas must acquire their visas by 31 January.

Failing to do so will result in legal action, he warned, urging compliance with the country's immigration regulations.
