Professor Dr Mobassher Monem, of the Public Administration Department at Dhaka University, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC).

This announcement was made through a circular issued on Wednesday (9 October) by Senior Assistant Secretary Nilufa Yasmin of the Ministry of Public Administration.

The circular stated that, in accordance with Article 138(1) of the Constitution, the president has appointed Dr Mobassher Monem as the new PSC chairman.

Under Article 139(1) of the Constitution, he will serve in this capacity for a term of five years from the date of assuming office, or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever comes first.

On Tuesday, former senior secretary Sohrab Hossain, who had assumed the role of PSC Chairman in September 2020, submitted his resignation to the President, along with 12 other members of the commission.

There had been calls for the resignation of the PSC chairman and the entire commission following the ouster of the Awami League government.

Against this backdrop, Hossain stepped down from his constitutional post one year before completing his five-year term.

Under the Bangladesh Public Service Commission Act, 2023, the PSC can consist of a Chairman and a minimum of six and a maximum of twenty members.
