Former planning minister MA Mannan was granted bail in a case related to an attack on students and civilians in Sunamganj.

The bail was granted on Wednesday (9 October) by Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Hemayet Uddin during a hearing held at midday.

However, it was noted that the plaintiff’s legal team was not present at the hearing.

Earlier, a commotion occurred during the bail hearing for MA Mannan, the Member of Parliament for Sunamganj-3.

Lawyers from both sides engaged in heated arguments, which prompted Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Hemayet Uddin to leave the courtroom. The hearing was then rescheduled for 2:30pm.

At present, former Planning Minister MA Mannan is undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

MA Mannan was arrested by police from his residence in Shantiganj Upazila on the night of 19 September. T

he following day, he was shown as arrested in a case filed under the Speedy Trial Act at Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station and was sent to court. Since then, he had been detained in Sunamganj District Jail.

Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, the Residential Medical Officer (RMO) at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, had earlier reported that MA Mannan was suffering from several health complications.

He had been taking medication for chest and abdominal pain for a long period. After conducting several tests, the doctors concluded that his mental health issues were more severe than his physical ailments.

The doctors recommended consulting a psychiatrist, and as there was no specialist for respiratory diseases at the local hospital, they advised transferring him to Sylhet for further treatment.

MA Mannan’s arrest on 19 September from his home in Shantiganj was followed by protests in the region.

Students staged demonstrations, human chains, and blockades along the Sunamganj-Sylhet regional highway, demanding his release.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists, along with affiliated organisations, held several protests in Shantiganj and Sunamganj, calling for his punishment.
