At least nine people were killed, and 50 workers are feared trapped after a 30-story building collapsed in Bangkok yesterday following a powerful earthquake.
The Thai government has sought international assistance to aid in the rescue efforts. Additionally, an inquiry into the building collapse has been ordered, and an investigative committee has been formed to determine the cause of the disaster.
Tremors from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake, centered in neighboring Myanmar—where the ruling junta reported at least 1,002 fatalities—shook Bangkok at approximately 1:20 pm (0620 GMT), causing the building to collapse.
Tearful family members gathered near the remains of the building, which crumbled into rubble within seconds on Friday. Many clung to shreds of hope that their loved ones, who were working on the site, might still be found alive.
The 30-story tower was under construction and was intended to house government offices.
