Ukraine has consented to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, raising hopes for a temporary halt to hostilities, contingent upon Russia's agreement.
Simultaneously, Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to providing Kyiv with renewed military assistance and intelligence support, reports BBC.
The development was announced in a joint statement following high-level discussions between US and Ukrainian officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (11 March).
According to the statement, Ukraine has accepted the US proposal for an immediate 30-day interim ceasefire with Russia, alongside initiating talks aimed at a permanent resolution to the conflict.
The Jeddah meeting was attended by US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and the Chief of Staff to Ukraine’s President, Andriy Yermak.
The discussions were led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Notably, no Russian representatives were present at the talks.
Rubio stated that Washington would now take the ceasefire proposal to Moscow, expressing hope that Russia would agree to the terms.
Commenting on the proposal, the US Secretary of State emphasised that while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously suggested a partial truce over maritime and air domains, Washington’s plan extends beyond that, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities.
