Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to announce his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party, CBS News reported on Monday.
According to CBS, Trudeau will remain in office until a successor is chosen. He has also reportedly requested Governor General Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament until 24 March.
The announcement is expected at 10:45 am ET from Rideau Cottage, where Trudeau will address Canadians.
Trudeau has faced mounting pressure to step down due to declining public support, including calls from within his own caucus. Reports indicate that over two dozen MPs, alongside regional caucuses from Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario, have urged him to resign.
The situation escalated following the resignation of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland last month. Freeland, long considered Trudeau's key ally, stepped down on the same day she was scheduled to present the fall economic statement.
In her resignation letter, later shared on social media, Freeland criticised Trudeau's handling of the economy and accused him of engaging in "costly political gimmicks." She also highlighted disagreements over addressing US President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.
Meanwhile, the opposition Conservative Party, enjoying a strong lead in polls for over a year, has pledged to introduce a motion of non-confidence against Trudeau’s government early this year.
