Tulip Siddiq, daughter of Sheikh Rehana, is facing mounting pressure to resign from her position in the UK Treasury after reports surfaced that she received a flat worth £700,000 as a gift in London from an ally from her aunt, the ousted prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.
The report, published by the London-based news outlet The Daily Mail on Sunday, 5 January, has triggered calls for her resignation.
The report claims that Tulip Siddiq, who holds a key role in the treasury, is under fire due to alleged misrepresentation concerning the flat situated in King's Cross.
Siddiq, however, refuted these allegations, telling The Daily Mail that the property was purchased for her by her parents and not received as a gift.
In light of these revelations, Conservative Party MPs are demanding Siddiq step down from her ministerial role unless she provides a satisfactory explanation.
Bob Blackman, a Conservative MP, emphasised that Siddiq must clarify her stance on the property and disclose the truth.
He remarked that without transparency, she would be deemed unsuitable for her ministerial duties.
Another MP, Matt Vickers, echoed these sentiments, stressing that such allegations are unacceptable against any government member, especially someone serving as Keir Starmer's anti-corruption minister.
Previous reports have mentioned that in 2004, Abdul Motalif, a developer and close associate of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, allegedly gifted Siddiq a two-bedroom flat in King's Cross, London.
