A stampede at a school funfair in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria, has claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others seriously injured, police confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday at Basorun Islamic High School in Nigeria's third-largest city.
According to the Oyo State Police Command, the injured children are currently receiving medical treatment. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, including the primary sponsor of the event, which was organized by Wings Foundation and Agidigbo FM radio.
The Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department has launched an investigation into the tragic event, police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso said in a statement.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a statement issued on Thursday. "I offer my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families who have lost their beloved children, as well as to the local community and state authorities," he said.
