Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated his readiness to engage in discussions with newly elected US President Donald Trump to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Putin also expressed his openness to compromise on the issue, making the remarks during his annual press conference on Thursday (19 December).
According to a Reuters report, Putin conveyed this during a televised annual question-and-answer session with the Russian public.
Responding to a question from a reporter of a US news channel, he mentioned his willingness to meet with Trump, noting that they had not spoken for several years.
On the subject of initiating negotiations with Ukrainian authorities, Putin confirmed that Russia would not impose any conditions.
When questioned about potential proposals he might offer Trump, Putin dismissed assertions of Russia's weakened position.
He emphasised that since ordering the deployment of troops to Ukraine in 2022, Russia had become stronger.
"We have always said that we are ready for dialogue and compromise. However, it is also important to see whether the other side is prepared for the same," Putin remarked.
He added, "The time will come when there will be no Ukrainians willing to fight. I believe no one would want to continue the war. We are prepared for discussions, but the other side must also show readiness for dialogue and compromise."
Last month, Reuters reported that Putin was keen to discuss a Ukraine ceasefire agreement with Trump but remained firm on not making any major regional concessions. He also underscored the necessity for Ukraine to abandon its aspirations to join NATO.
During Thursday's conference, Putin reiterated that Russia has no preconditions for beginning talks with Ukraine. He expressed willingness to negotiate with anyone, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, but stipulated that any agreement must be signed with Ukraine's legitimate authorities.
