Bangladesh will sign an agreement with Nepal regarding the import of electricity in July, said Minister of State for Electricity, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid MP.
"We are going to sign the agreement in July. Electricity will be available at the same rate for 20 years from the power plant," he said responding to a question during a press conference on Thursday (4 July).
"The price of electricity generated by gas and coal-fired power plants is not stable. Prices fluctuate with the rise and fall of coal and gas prices. The same amount of gas that we bought for $7 before had to be bought for $67 now. This cost Petrobangla more than Tk35,000 crore," he added.
On 11 June, the government approved the proposal to import electricity from Nepal.
The hydropower from Nepal will mainly come during the monsoon seasons through India.
