Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has accused the BNP of politicising the illness of their Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

In a statement signed by Awami League Office Secretary Biplob Barua, Quader accused the BNP of misleading the public with false information regarding Khaleda Zia's health.

Quader said, “The public has repeatedly rejected various political programs of the BNP under the guise of movements, and the BNP has become a failed political party. Now, their so-called movement centers around their corrupt, convicted, and ill leader, Begum Khaleda Zia. Despite being a convicted criminal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has allowed her to receive treatment at her own home and at the country's most advanced private hospital, under the supervision of both domestic and foreign specialist doctors.”

He added, “There is no precedent for a convicted criminal to receive such free medical treatment. However, the BNP has been demanding Khaleda Zia’s release outside the legal framework for years. They spread rumors about her health to incite the public and attempt to garner sympathy, having failed to mobilize successful movements.”

Quader said, “According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Khaleda Zia is a convicted criminal due to corruption. Demanding the release of a convicted criminal outside the constitutional and legal process is nothing but audacity. There is no provision for a convicted person to leave the country bypassing the legal process.”

He reaffirmed that the Bangladesh Awami League is committed to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution. "No democratic government can accept any illegal, undue, or irrational demands," said.
